LAS VEGAS — On a conference call prior to UFC 84, BJ Penn could not hide his anger for Sean Sherk, the former UFC lightweight champ
“This is personal,” said Penn. “For me, it’s hard for a guy who never used performance-enhancing drugs. I wake up day in and day out, and my body is in pain. It gets to you after a while when you hear about someone who uses performance-enhancing drugs. It’s unbelievable. I feel I’m a purist. When someone uses EPO, or hormones or steroids it just gets to you after a while. Fighting is the most important thing in the world to me. When they pervert it, I can’t take it or handle it.”
Sherk listened and then responded calmly.
“I train hard and study video,” he said. “We set game plans and get guys to come in to mimic the guy I’m fighting. It is the same thing I always do. [In regard to Penn’s comments about steroids], I know what I did and didn’t do. I went above and beyond to prove my innocence.”
On May 24th, when the fighters squared off at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, Penn again could not hide his anger for Sherk, as he scored a TKO at the end of Round 3. The beginning of the end occurred when Penn connected with a powerful knee, which dropped Sherk against the fence. Penn then pounced and put the finishing touches on the bout.
In other bouts, Wanderlei Silva convincingly put an end to his three-fight losing streak by scoring a KO over Keith Jardine, and Lyoto Machida scored a decision over Tito Ortiz. Following are some quick highlights of the fights. For additional coverage, check out Ultimate Grappling magazine.
