UFC Heavyweight Champion Rodrigo Nogueira's accomplishments outside the cage may outshine those inside.

ImageWe have all seen Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira easily dismantle formidable opponents such as Mark Coleman, Cro Cop, Heath Hearing, Bob Sapp and, most recently, Tim Sylvia for the UFC heavyweight championship. This group of elite fighters represents but a small sample in a long list of men who have fallen victim to the technical proficiency of Rodrigo’s incomparable submission skills.

Few people, however, are familiar with the real Rodrigo — the man behind the persona and the limelight. What’s he really like? What are his interests and hobbies outside of MMA? In this interview, we will delve into the motivations and inspirations of the man they call “Minotauro.”

UG: What are your hobbies?

RN: Besides training in the various disciplines that comprise MMA, I also enjoy the beach, movies, playing with my Presa Canario [a breed of dogs originally from the Canary Islands] and riding my bike.
I used to surf, but I had to take a break from it due to a freak accident that occurred when the edge of my board cut into my Achilles tendon. Motorcycles are another hobby of mine, but I have lately refrained from these potentially dangerous activities in favor of safer ones more conducive to health and well-being, such as swimming.

UG: What is it like to grow up with a twin brother?

RN: Overall, it has been a positive experience. We encourage one another, and we share many common interests. We have shared an amazing bond since we were children, and we share a competitive nature. We are always trying to outdo each other, and this has been a motivating factor. We also draw a great deal of emotional support from one another. My brother is my main sparring partner, best friend and motivator.

UG: How are you two different?

RN: We obviously have differences, but our similarities far outweigh them. We are social, outgoing individuals, and we enjoy having people around us and spending time with friends.

UG: What is your basic philosophy of life?

RN: I’m fulfilled by doing the things that I like to do, by cultivating a healthy lifestyle, being able to practice sports and especially the martial arts. My parents introduced me to judo at the age of three. Its philosophy, including respect for your neighbor and appreciation for your teacher, was ingrained in me at an early age, which allowed me to develop an appreciation for the Japanese culture. It motivated me to want to fight in Japan. Much of my philosophy was derived from my judo upbringing.

UG: Do you enjoy being approached by fans?

RN: Absolutely! The fans are the source of our income; they make our sport possible. Fans give you the ultimate feedback on a job well done.

UG: What’s the best way for you to relax?

RN: I enjoy the beach, good music and the movies. I enjoy reading while at the beach, spending time with my friends and entertaining my 7-year-old daughter, Taina. Since Taina was two years old, she has wanted a jiu-jitsu gi. I signed her up for ballet and swimming, but she didn’t like it — she is only interested in jiu-jitsu. I also enjoy traveling. Whenever I fight or conduct seminars overseas, I like to explore my surroundings and learn as much as I can about the culture and people.

UG: If you were not a fighter, what would you be?

RN: I would be a history teacher or a rancher. I love horses and cattle. I grew up on a ranch, so that’s part of my roots.
