What do Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend of The Who have to do with mixed martial arts? ImageWhat do Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend of The Who have to do with mixed martial arts? More than you can imagine.

It's funny how you associate certain songs to different parts of your life. The connection can be anything from a girl to an experience to a vacation to maybe even MMA.

As for girls, I've always associated the Bread song "Baby, I'm a Want You" with my Ninth Grade girlfriend. In high school, Eve and America ("Sister Golden Hair") went together nicely.

I could live to be 200, and I'll never forget the connection between "Tequila Sunrise" and Oceanside, California. I started my brother's Bug, which had been hotwired because someone had stolen our keys, cranked the Eagles and headed out to the closest place to eat. My brother was in the passenger seat, and one of my friends was in the back. We didn't realize it at the time, but Mr. Murphy (If anything can go wrong, it will) was also one of our passengers.

I stalled the car, just as we drove over the railroad tracks, trapping the guy behind us right on the tracks. Of course, that's when the lights started flashing and the gates went down. I looked in my rearview mirror and saw horror on the driver's face.

My friend and my brother, showing some darn good reactions and amazing poise, immediately jumped out and pushed the car out of the way, enabling the driver behind us to pull his car off the track and live to see another day. After all these years, I'd like to apologize to that other driver.

A CLEAR KNOCKOUT

The Who is next, and you talk about two elements of your life coming together. On one hand, you've got one of the best-if not the best-rock bands ever. On the other, you've got MMA. Put them expertly together, and you've got a knockout.

When the lights go down before the start of the UFC and they start playing that montage, set to "Baba O'Reilly," my eyes are glued to that screen, and I've got chills. Don't even talk to me when that's playing. And it doesn't matter that I saw it the previous month or the month before that, or the month before that. Every time I see that I love it.

Some of that awesome footage includes Georges St. Pierre, on his knees, begging the UFC for a title shot. "Please, I want that belt so badly," he says.

And I love that sequence in which Frank Trigg gets in Matt Hughes' face before the start of their second fight. Hughes, refusing to back down, shoves Trigg away. In addition to these highlights, there are great shots of David Loiseau's taekwondo kicks-beautifully repeated-and some incredible knockouts, plus a whole lot more.

YOU GOTTA SEE THIS

If you think about it, you must have some songs tied in to different aspects of your life, too. If The Who's "Baba O'Reilly" is missing from your list, you need to get to the next UFC and check out that montage. It's high energy. It's classic rock. It's the UFC. It's MMA.

Until next time.
