Written by Ryron and Rener Gracie

Your journey along the Path of Jiu-Jitsu continues. In this installment, you're going to work with Ryron and Rener Gracie. Yeah, that Ryron and Rener Gracie ... from the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Torrance, California. We don't need to tell you that this is a golden opportunity to learn from two members of the "First Family of Grappling." -Editor

Technique 1: Escape From the Mount

As Rener sets up his attack from the mount position (1),

Ryron controls Rener's wrist and elbow (2).

Ryron also traps Rener's foot on the same side. Ryron pulls Rener close, lifts his hips straight up (3),

rolls over his shoulder and steps over (4),

landing on top (5). Ryron then prepares to pass the guard.

Mistakes

Image
Many people trap the arm in this fashion, which is incorrect (6).
Image
This is wrong because it allows the attacking opponent to remove his hands from the control. Also, when rolling an opponent out, many people tend to roll sideways (7)
Image
rather than lifting their hips straight up (8).

Note: This corresponds to the second move.

Technique 2: Americana Armlock From the Side Mount

Image
Ryron establishes control from the side mount (1)

and then places the back of his left hand against his right ear (2).
Image
Rener attempts to free his arm (3).
Image
Ryron discreetly snatches Rener's wrist and places his elbow against Rener's neck (4).
Image
Ryron slides his right arm under Rener's elbow and grabs his own wrist (5).
Image
Ryron lowers his head and slides his hands toward Rener's feet as he lifts up on the elbow, twisting the rotator cuff (6).
