He slithers and slides across the floor, like an alligator making its way to a lake. As his legs go one way, his torso goes another. And when he decides to slither no more, he stands and flashes another winning smile.
If you’ve been around the BJJ game for a while, you know we’re talking about Ronaldo “Jacare” (alligator) Souza and his routine after he records a victory. Now Jacare has taken his skills to MMA, so we figured it was high time to take it to him with the following questions. Pull up a chair and relax. Don’t get too close though … he might bite! — Editor
What do you do to relax?
I like to relax at home, have a good meal, play the guitar and hang out with friends and family.
So it is true that you play the guitar. And you sing, as well?
My playing skills are somewhat limited. I’m best at singing along with my brother, who is an awesome player.
What king of music do you listen to?
Bob Marley (reggae), Brazilian pop music, Tupac and Puff Daddy. I like rap and hip-hop. As my mood changes, so does my taste in music.
What are your hobbies?
Everything related to fighting.
Do you have brothers and sisters?
Yes, I have two brothers and a sister; Regiele is 33, Renato is 19 and Renata, who is the youngest and my beautiful sister, is 16.
What do you like most about living in Manaus?
My friends are here and this is where my school is. I also love the climate, the culture, the food and the warmth of the people.
What’s your ideal vacation spot?
Manaus is a fascinating place, and I feel at home here. Whenever I travel, I’m eager to return because I start missing my friends and my city … from the time I leave.
Do you enjoy the nightlife?
I don’t see a problem with going out at night, once your “mission” has been accomplished. I used to go to nightclubs, but I have outgrown the desire. I’d rather stay home, have fun with family and friends, and get a good night’s rest.
Brazilians are passionate about soccer. Do you root for a team and are you as passionate?
I’m a fan, and I cheer for the Botafogo Soccer Club. I’m no longer as fanatical because I don’t own a TV. That, as you might expect, prevents me from keeping up with the games.
What’s your proudest moment?
I’m proudest of the moments in which I saw my hard work and dedication pay off. I’m proud of my titles … I was Brazilian champion five times, including twice as a black belt. I have fought and won memorable matches and have won my division at the ADCC. These victories projected me into the international scene and helped jump-start my carrier.
Do you enjoy being approached by fans?
I love my fans and always feel honored when they approach me. I make an effort to reciprocate their kindness. Fans make you feel great and they make it all worthwhile.
Do you like the U.S. and would you consider relocating here?
I’m treated well by the Americans and they are considerate and polite. I’ve also built strong ties and friendships in the U.S., but I’m not willing to leave Manaus and relocate elsewhere.
Can you tell us something about yourself that we would never guess?
I’m a jokester when I’m around friends, and I often make a fool of myself.
Brazil has become one of the world’s fastest growing economies. Much of this growth has resulted from the sale of its natural resources in the Amazon. Has this growth benefited the local people?
Yes it has. Industries are flourishing and jobs are being created. The level of commerce and manufacturing is overwhelming. We export appliances, technology and many other products throughout Brazil and internationally. This influx of investment has resulted in less poverty and a better quality of life for the natives. The downside is the infringement within our environment; a conscientious effort must be maintained in order for us to reach a balance with nature (rivers, flora and fauna).
Among all of the wonderful countries you’ve visited, are there any that you would like to recommend for our readers to visit?
I loved the hospitality and beauty of Spain; I was impressed by Italy’s rich history of its architecture and art. In France, I was touched by the harmony and sophistication of Paris and it’s museums. Cannes is a city full of life and a place where you can relax. The Alps were a perfect example of nature at its best! While in Europe, I visited the world’s largest medieval castle; it was full of intrigue and mystery.
Finally, if you were not a fighter, what would you be?
I would like to be a physical therapist because as a fighter I identify with the frustration that athletes endure as a result of painful sports injuries. I would like to make a difference
