SANTA MONICA, California - The historic Civic Auditorium was the site of the Total Fighting Alliance's most recent MMA card. These purveyors of hardcore cage fighting didn't disappoint as a raucous, near sell-out crowd of about 2,000 were treated to eight action-packed contests, in which each of the four champions preserved his belt. • In the evening's first match up, JJ Ambrose (3-1-0) secured a win over Adam Lehman (1-3-0) via guillotine choke at 1:43 of the first round to hold onto his welterweight title. • In a hotly contested, albeit brief bout, lightweight Traver Boehm (2-1-0) triumphed over Aaron Miller (0-1-0) with a triangle choke at the 1:40 mark of round-one. • Although he required the full five rounds to do it, Todd Guimond (3-2-0) successfully defended his bantamweight strap against a game Maurice Eazel (3-5-0), via a split decision. • The fourth battle of the night saw heavyweight Justin Schalk (1-0) garner a ground and pound TKO at the 2:30 mark of round-one over the massive Cesar De La Torra (0-1). • Lightweight Steve Magdaleno (2-0-1) needed the full three rounds to overcome an inspired Jesse Romero (3-4-0), earning a split decision. • Welterweight Jason Cordero (2-1-0) utilized a rear-naked choke to actualize a win over Benjamin Gonzalez (0-2-0) at 1:10 into the first round. • Middleweight Jason Bukich (3-0-0) utilized a dexterous armbar submission to retain his title by dominating the game Daniel Hernandez (0-1-0) at 1:08 round-two. • For the evening's swan song, Armando Sanchez (8-5-0) defended his featherweight crown against Gator Harris (1-1-0) by way of a ground and pound referee's stoppage at the 2:15 mark of round-one. UNCLE GENE In attendance were notables such as the IFL Sabres' Antonio McKee, past UFC referee and MMA competitor, Larry Landless, UFC combatant Anthony Johnson, as well as the legendary Judo Gene LeBell, who served as one of the evening's judges. Prior to the card's onset, LeBell said, "I'm here to be a judge. I know a lot of the fighters, but I'm not prejudiced. These guys better win or they'll get a bad decision. Mixed martial arts is the best thing to come along in years. I've always practiced judo, wrestling, Greco-Roman, free-style, boxing, jiu-jitsu, kempo, shotokan and taekwondo. Tonight you can expect to see them all displayed. I'd pay big bucks to come here but as a judge, they let me in free! I looking forward to seeing some good fights tonight. I don't like it when a guy runs away. I like fighters to be aggressive and do the best job they can." LeBell, now seventy-eight, still trains regularly and maintains a dojo in North Hollywood, CA.
