Nelson, a former IFL heavyweight champ, scored his knockout at 3:45 of Round 1. The bout culminated season 10 of the UFC’s reality TV show.
Earlier in the evening, Dana White, UFC president, announced that former light-heavyweight champ Chuck Liddell would be one of the coaches on “The Ultimate Fighter 11.” The opposing coach will be Tito Ortiz; at the end of the show, the two former champs are scheduled to fight.
OTHER BOUTS
Following is an overview of the other bouts from Saturday night.
• James McSweeney scored a TKO over Darrill Schoonover.
• Jon Jones (9-1) lost the first time when he was disqualified for throwing illegal elbows at Matt Hamill (9-2).
• Kimbo Slice improved his record to 4-1 with a unanimous decision over Houston Alexander, whose record dropped to 9-5. In the first round, Alexander circled the perimeter of the cage and occasionally threw round kicks at Slice’s legs. In Round 2, the fighters engaged more, as Slice scored with some ground and pound. In Round 3, Alexander dropped Slice with another round kick. When the judges announced the score, however, they ruled in favor of Slice.
• Mark Bocek (8-2) defeated Joe Brammer (7-1) by rear naked choke.
• Frankie Edgar also used a rear naked choke, as he improved to 11-1 while Matt Veach suffered his first loss after 11 victories.
• Matt Mitrione, in his debut, knocked out Marcus Jones, whose record dropped to 4-3.
• Other winners include John Howard, Brian Stann and Jon Madsen.
