SYDNEY, Australia — If you weren’t a believer in UFC heavyweight Cain Velasquez, you should be now.
Velasquez, who trains at the American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose, California, improved his record 8-0 as he scored a knockout over former UFC interim heavyweight champ Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira here at the Acer Arena.
The end for Nogueira, whose record dropped to 32-6-1, came at 2:20 of Round 1.
In other fights on the card, Wanderlei Silva, fighting at middleweight for the first time, notched win 33 with a unanimous decision over Michael Bisping, whose record dropped to 19-3. Silva likely secured the win with a flurry at the end of the third round.
George Sotiropoulos, who trains at 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu in Los Angeles, defeated Joe Stevenson by unanimous decision. Sotiropoulos is now 12-2; Stevenson is 36-11.
Ryan Bader improved to 12-0 and handed Keith Jardine his third consecutive loss with a knockout at 2:10 of Round 3.
Mirko Cro Cop Filopovic scored a TKO over Anthony Perosh. Cro Cop is now 26-7 while Perosh dropped to 10-6.
Like Jardine, Stephan Bonnar has lost three consecutive fights. Krzysztof Soszynski scored a TKO over Bonnar when the ringside physician stopped the bout due to a cut in Round 3. Bonnar, who appeared upset with the call, suffered the cut when the two fighters banged heads.
Chris Lytle showed some ground skill as he submitted Brian Foster in the first round. Lytle improved his record to 38-17-4; Foster’s record dropped to 15-5.
CB Dollaway notched win 11 with a unanimous decision over Goran Reljic, who lost for the first time. He’s now 8-1.
James Te Huna scored a TKO over Igor Pokrajac.
