• When the ocean is 68 degrees and the surf is a 2-3 feet, you don’t want to find yourself in Home Depot, trying to figure out which parts you need to fix a shower. And an hour later, when it’s still not fixed … but that’s when Jeff Monson saved the day.

When Monson walked in for his fight against Tim Sylvia, the UFC played John Lennon’s Imagine, and that’s the song that came on the radio. My mind went from the aggravation of trying to fix something I knew nothing about to Monson walking in. Problem solved. Give Monson an assist. I wonder if I should pay him.

• Years ago, during a photo shoot at another publication, Olympic TKD gold medalist Herb Perez told us to watch out for Steven Lopez, a kid with an abundance of talent. Herbie J was on the money, as Lopez won a bronze in TKD at the Beijing Games.
