If you’ve been a fan of MMA and BJJ long enough, you know, without a doubt, how Wallid Ismail (Va-lee-ge Is-my-you) reacted after he defeated Royce Gracie in a BJJ match during the 1990s in Brazil. Wallid’s facial expression might be the greatest reaction ever, in any sport, to a victory.
It wasn’t as good, but Seth Petruzelli’s reaction to his victory over Kimbo Slice on EliteXC’s CBS Saturday Night Fights was darn good. There were some good fights, but that reaction really made the night.
Conversely, it was extremely disappointing to hear that Ken Shamrock was ineligible to fight because of the cut he sustained. I had found out about 8:40 when a press release from EliteXC came through. EliteXC has to make that fight happen. Ken has to wait 45 days before he can compete, so let’s get them on their next card.
And I loved those front push kicks Gina Carano threw at Kelly Kobold, and I loved Kobold’s aggressiveness. That was an entertaining fight.
And what about the ratings? I’m curious to see how Elite did. They went head-to-head against baseball’s playoff games. Plus, there might have been one million fans at the Coliseum in So Cal to watch SC win. Our circulation department, for sure, is happy about their 40-10 win. There was a lot going on, so this will be a good test to see how MMA is doing on Prime time.
